Westcountry Sled Dogs was established in October 2006. When we set up the group, there wasn't a lot of information readily available about sled dogs and related activities. So our goal was to promote sled dog activities and to find like-minded people who were interested.
Since we started the group, we have learnt a great deal about showing and working our dogs, and made many new friends through this website. Once found, many have become addicted to the joys of mushing and sled dogs.
We still meet as a social group when we can as we all have busy schedules. We have helped many people discover the fun sport of mushing, bike-joring and Canicross; however times have changed. We are still happy to direct new mushers to mentors and experienced people, but we can no longer take on mentoring ourselves.
We moved on to help educating through charity events on the breed, rescuing through Hug A Husky and demonstrations. Over the years we have raised several thousands of pounds for "Huskies in Need", as well as other charities, however, from 2015 we will be reducing our volunteering due to work/health commitments. Westcountry Sled Dogs will still be out and about, but in a reduced capacity.
Take a look at the Events Page to learn more about what we do.
As a social group, we meet once or twice a week in and around South Devon to work our dogs. We have introduced many breeds into mushing and other sports, such as German Shepherds, Inuits and Dobermans alongside the usual sled dog breeds (Siberian Huskies, Alasakan Malamutes and Canadian Eskimo Dogs).
We do this for the fun of it. If the dogs love it - then so do we! We are full of support and motivation!
